Consider going handmade. I just took the Buy Handmade Pledge at buyhandmade.org. This year, I will strive to purchase and/or make as many handmade gifts as possible this year. The idea is better for the environment, promotes crafters, and makes gifts just that much more special.

As a craftsperson myself, I fully support the idea and will be taking my pledge one step further by offering free shipping and handling on all products purchased at my online store, Stuff Made With Yarn, between now and December 25th. For those of you who have not heard about this, I have opened up a shop on etsy.com to sell some of my knitted and crocheted items (we just don't have room enough for it all in the apartment!).

Stuff Made With Yarn carries beautiful, one-of-a-kind, handmade products all made from yarn. My eventual goal is for the store to contain any and all items that can be made with yarn. As of now, I have some beautiful capelets and scarves and will be adding to that list in the upcoming months. SMWY is also on Twitter and Facebook and has an official blog. Be sure to check everything out!

This holiday season, help myself and other artisans and give a gift made by hand and with love.

Bram and I just celebrated our 1st anniversary yesterday! It has been an absolutely fantastic year filled with love, learning, adventure, and friendship. We are both looking forward to many more years to come! Thanks to all of you for being such a very important part of our lives both as individuals and as a couple. And a Happy belated Thanksgiving to all!

Happy Birthday, Turner!

Or "prettige verjaardag, Turner!" as the Dutch would say. Yesterday was Turner's 5th birthday! As he's a shelter dog, we don't know the exact date of his birth, but 2 vets have made a November estimate. I had meant to set an official date and finally did so with Bram's help for this year. So Turner's official birthdate is November 21st!

Also, I have FINALLY put up Halloween pictures! Here are the pictures from our Halloween party and here is the start of the IWCU Halloween party, which is part of my IWCU 2009 album. I was asked to come as a fortune teller and read fortunes for children during the party, and Bram came along as Scooby Doo to help.

We're now preparing for Thanksgiving and the coinsiding visit from my parents next week. I more than likely will not have the chance to post before Thanksgiving, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving from the Jansens!

Until next time!

Turner Jansen, super star!

On a whim, I wrote up a piece on Turner and submitted it to Family Matters Magazine here in the Netherlands for their Pet of the Issue series. Coincidentally, I picked up a free copy of the magazine at the Expatica 'i am not a tourist fair' and as I flipped through it on the train back to Utrecht, I came across a familiar (furry) face. Turner's famous!

So for the third part of the Jansen Family Members Update series, I would like to present: Turner Jansen, super star! Below is the write-up on our Little Buddy as seen in FM Magazine's October-November issue. Click on the image to enlarge. Enjoy!

Bram Jansen, star goalie

For years, Bram has been a member of an adult football league. He and a bunch of other guys started playing years ago and, although they took a year off last year, they're back and ready to play! Their team name? Hooligans United! The boys gather at the indoor sports complex at Utrecht University to play the team they are assigned to that evening.

The Hooligans have been playing for almost a month, and last Thursday I was finally able to make it to a game! Bram's the team's goalie and stopped some really tough kicks. The guys did a great job, which showed through the final score: 6-3! They were not 100% happy with their performance, but it was their first win of the season, so that more than made up for it!

After the game, the guys hit the showers and then met me in the Sportcafe for a beer. It was Bram's turn to take the team's laundry home, which meant that I got to wash a bunch of sweaty uniforms!

Their next game is tonight. Keep your fingers crossed! GO HOOLIGANS!

Little Broadway!

Little Broadway is in business!

Bank account. check!
Kamer van Koophandel (Chamber of Commerce) registration. check!
First gig. check!
Website and email address. check!

The first session will take place at the Violenschool in Hilversum on 26 October 2009. Sixteen students between the ages of 4 and 8 are enrolled and excited as I am to get started! Check out the website (still under construction and awaiting a proper logo) at http://littlebroadway.webs.com. You can also send an email to littlebroadwaynl@gmail.com.

I also recently did a theater workshop for the October monthly meeting of the International Women's Contact Utrecht. Ten women were in attendance and had a blast! I'm still hearing about it!

And Bram has been working hard at Egon Zehnder where they have just switched over to a new data base. They are still ironing out a few problems with the new system, but once everything's in place, life at the office should get much easier.

Turner is still helping me babysit Koen on Tuesdays and this upcoming week, we're adding Otto to the list. This means Turner will be cycling every day this week - a big step!

Some Light Reading

Welcome Back, Fall!

  • Oct. 2nd, 2009 at 12:16 PM
Halloween08
It's been a busy summer and, although it was short, the Jansens are ready for Fall. Fall in Holland means lots of rain, people bundled up in scarves and jackets, and snuggling indoors until the stingy Dutch deem that it's high time to turn on the heat - a little, anyway!

Here are some of the things we've been up to:

Turner spent a few weeks at "Summer Camp" (aka Yuppie Dogs dog vacation farm) and although he's not terribly fond of dogs, being with almost 40 other pooches on a large farm seems to have done him some good. Bram credits it to the fact that his time at Yuppie Dogs made him realize that he too is a dog! He's working on growing his winter coat back, which means more vacuuming for Mommy and Daddy.

Tiffany and Bram spent 2 1/2 weeks in the US. They spent some time in Florida at the amusement parks the first week. Then they flew to Maryland and had a wonderful time at Mary Kate and Brian's wedding, paid a visit to the Maryland Renaissance Festival, spent time at the Great Frederick Fair, and helped Tiffany's dad celebrate his 50th birthday with a surprise party! It was the longest Tiffany's spent in the US since her move to the Netherlands last December. Read her latest entry on Clogs and Tulips: An American in Holland about how this time, coming back was A Little Bit Harder.

Since coming back to Utrecht, Bram has begun another season of football (soccer to all you Americans). He and his friends have been playing with an adult Football league for several years but decided to take last year off. They all grew restless (not to mention out of shape) and decided it was high time to make their return. Unfortunately they lost their first game of the season, but they're sure to come back in the next game on October 8.

Tiffany has been busy with several things. Things are going well for Little Broadway (Bram came up with this adorable name for Tiffany's after school musical theater program). The business is registered with the Kamer van Koophandel (Chamber of Commerce) and soon will have it's own bank account. Another school in Amsterdam has shown interest and Tiffany's hoping that she will be starting at the Violenschool in Hilversum in the next few weeks.

While on vacation, Tiffany received a call from the all-female (except the director) all-Dutch (exept herself and another American expat) singing group Divina Close Harmony inviting her to join the group! So far, she's been to one rehearsal and is loving it! Her first performance will be in Apeldoorn on November 27th. She was also able to make it to the Netherlands Film Festival to see a wonderful film based on the short story Romance with Double Bass by Anton Tsjechov complete with live music and dance.

She has also been very busy writing. The new edition of Mary's Story is now available at Medieval Maidens and contains about 10 new pages and several beautiful illustrations. She is also keeping busy with Clogs and Tulips: An American in Holland (see link above), gotten her story A Glimpse in the Mirror published on Somerset and Wessex Eating Disorders Association's website as well as the site We Bite Back, seen her article Weighty Issues: The Dutch Edition published on expatexchange.com, published an article on eHow about Cool Kids' Hairstyles, and did an interview on expat relationships for expatexchange.com.

Finally, she jumped on the etsy.com bandwagon and is now selling her yarn projects online as Stuff Made with Yarn! Please check the site out and make a purchase. Right now, only capelets are available, but more will be coming soon.

On October 29th, Tiffany and Bram celebrated their 10th monthiversary (I promise I'll stop the monthiversary thing as soon as we make it to a year)!

And that's all from us! Hope everyone is happy and healthy and, as always, we look forward to hearing from you!

Love,

Bram, Tiffany, and Turner
